A big THANK YOU to all who supported the Somers Library Foundation’s Ninth Annual 5K Trail Run and 1 Mile Family Fun Run held on Sunday, September 12, 2021!

A small group of library lovers and community minded neighbors started the Somers Library Foundation 5K Trail Run and 1 Mile Family Fun Walk ten years ago.  We couldn’t have imagined then what a wonderful community event it would turn out to be.  First and foremost, it annually raises more than $10,000 to support critical Library infrastructure and services. Over the course of 10 years, more than $100,000 has been donated, with 2021 – despite the ravages of the pandemic – being the most successful year ever.  These funds are dedicated to improving the library and allowing it to adapt to changes in the community’s needs.  The support the library receives from dozens of area businesses, leaders and families each year is a testament to the good citizenship and strong values of the Somers community.

Even more importantly, race day itself is a glimpse of what neighbors can do when they pull together.  Staffed entirely by volunteers, dozens of helpers, of all ages, mark out more than three miles of cross country trails with painted arrows, streamers, flags and festive markings.  We are proud to report that we haven’t lost anyone on the course yet!  Others assist by soliciting donations, registering runners, designing and distributing race T-shirts, gathering supplies (bagels, water and medals, and gifts for our youngest athletes) and coordinating with Town and School officials and the Somers Police.  The teamwork on display is remarkable and the camaraderie is inspiring.

A special shout out must be reserved for the Somers High School Track and Cross Country Community.  The course was designed by the high school’s dedicated coaches.  It is one of the most challenging and enjoyable courses in the area.  Each year, Coaches Mike Lacko, Jessie Arnett and John Vegliante encourage their teams and their families to support the event.  Many volunteer on race day to direct and encourage runners on the course, while others impress with their running skills, regularly finishing at the front of the pack.  The spirit and energy of the youth of Somers bring such joy to all that participate and are a big part of what makes the Somers Library Foundation 5K and 1 Mile Family Fun Walk such a fantastic community event.
