Build a robot, learn how to produce your own podcast, design and print objects in 3D. These are just a few of the exciting possibilities under consideration for the future Studio SL makerspace*.

What’s a makerspace?

Studio SL will comprise collaborative workspaces for creating, exploring, tinkering and learning using high tech and no-tech tools. These spaces will be open to children, teens, adults and entrepreneurs, and it could include a variety of maker equipment like 3D printers, laser cutters and other new technologies.

No-tech design

A makerspace, however, is more than just fancy equipment; if you have cardboard, Legos and art supplies, you’re in business. By experimenting with hands-on design and construction, a makerspace promotes curiosity and creative problem solving and fosters self-confidence. It can also help build critical thinkings skills essential for 21st century careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

Areas of exploration could include electronics, 3D printing and modeling, coding, robotics, video blogging, music production, and many more exciting possibilities.

Fashion design using a 3D printer

A makerspace will enable a collaborative learning environment where Somers residents can come together to share materials and learn new skills. It will be a setting for community partnership and creation.

*Completion date is TBD, contingent on achieving projected fundraising goal.
