This just in … read about us in The Somers Record

The results for our 2018 Book Sale are in and they are off the charts!

Thank you Somers!  A great turnout by the community produced Book Sale results that were nothing less than phenomenal.

  • More than 23,000 items were donated.
Somers residents answered the call when the request for used books, CDs and DVDs went out. Book sale experts told us the quality of our donated materials was exceptional.
  • Dozens of Somers residents answered the call to serve as book sale volunteers.
Our volunteers did terrific work, had lots of fun, made new friends and are responsible for helping us produce the best attended library fundraiser in many years. We are so proud of our volunteers. Thank you for everything.
  • Somers businesses were there when we needed them.
A big thanks to Sebastian Capital, Best Plumbing Tile & Stone, Somers Volunteer Fire Department and The Somers Record. We couldn’t have done it without their help and encouragement. We were also fortunate to have a very strong partnership with the Somers Library director and staff. Their expertise and encouragement was much appreciated.
  • A big shoutout to Somers students.
Throughout preparations and during the sale, middle and high school students were with us at every stage. Members of the high school football, basketball and baseball teams moved more than 450 boxes to the library from our temporary storage facility. Our student volunteers were among our hardest workers.
  • A huge turnout by book sale shoppers surpassed all our expectations.
We were told by book sale experts that first-year sales typically raise $3,000 and will attract around 500 shoppers. The Somers Book Sale blew through those numbers in the first two days of the four-day sale. By the time the book sale concluded, more than $8,000 was raised with 1,200 shoppers attending the event. Now we can do even more to help our library be a modern and welcoming place for individuals and families to read and explore ideas, to connect with others, and to learn and grow.
  • Sharing our success.
We were so very fortunate to receive the thousands of donated books in the run-up to the sale. As wonderful as our book sales were, not every book found a buyer. We are proud, however, to report that no donation went to waste. Unsold children’s books and young adult materials were donated to teachers and schools. We also delivered adult and other reading materials to homeless shelters, senior centers and other non-profit organizations throughout the area.

Thanks again to our book donors, volunteers, business sponsors, the Somers Library staff and our many buyers. It was an incredible four days and we hope you had as much fun as we had organizing the book sale.

We’ll see you again soon.
